Falmouth has a deep maritime history. Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds were major shipping routes for products used up and down the East Coast and beyond. Nobska lighthouse has stood over both sounds since 1829. It has witnessed all sorts of weather events, hundreds of thousands of vessels have passed by, mostly without incident but a few marine disasters have happened within sight.
Nobska has been the home to many civilian and Coast Guard keepers over the years. In 2014, when the Coast Guard decided to no longer use it for housing, The Friends of Nobska Light was formed to take over the care and maintenance of the property and transform the house into a Maritime Museum. Construction is currently ongoing to rehabilitate the building.
