Opening Reception
New Works by Paul and Pharr Schulenburg
Paul Schulenburg, a member of Boston’s Copley Society, creates skilled landscapes and unique figurative works. Paul’s paintings of fishermen effectively capture the rich history of the working people of Cape Cod (and recently one a First Place from the Copley Society). His portraits of women touch on the softer, private, restful sides of life. His latest oils have been inspired by the people, including many of Provincetown’s world- renowned artists, and places he has encountered. Paul has been honored with two shows at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and with a commission from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Paul has created award- winning art for publication worldwide and formerly as a leading illustrator, his client list included Digital, Fidelity, HP, IBM, Lucent, Sunoco, TIME, the Wall Street Journal, Houghton Miffin, Ziff- Davis and many others.
Pharr Schulenburg expresses a wide range of emotion in her figurative work and a unique vantage point in many of her still-lifes. Her brilliant color palette and rich textures make each of her paintings exciting for the viewer. When asked about her work, Pharr said I love to paint. And when I paint, I work spontaneously. It is the beauty of light that draws me to a subject and really inspires me. I have an immediate response to my subject and I work instinctively. The fresh not too studied quality is something I hope is communicated to the viewer. I want the work to express my joy in the action of painting in the physical quality of the paint. I work so that the composition and the color express the subjects physical and emotional quality and my reaction to it.
