Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents A PBS "Secrets of the Dead" Original Documentary "Jamestown's Dark Winter"
Jamestown, Virginia. The site of the first permanent English colony the Americas settled in 1607 and the home of the archaeological site “Historic Jamestowne” today. It has long been speculated that the harsh conditions faced by the colonists during the winter of 1609 might have made them desperate enough to participate in the unthinkable. Archaeologists have been excavating in Jamestown for more than 20 years and in April 2012, a team of Historic Jamestowne archeologists discovered something surprising in their excavation: the remains of a young woman, dating back to 1609, buried in the trash layer of a cellar. Now, 400 years later, a cellar excavation has uncovered numerous bone fragments all belonging to this adolescent female. With the help of forensic anthropologists, the extraordinary and frightening story of this young woman comes to life.
