Plastics in our environment are a critical concern for all of us. Today, 80% of marine litter is plastic, and it caused the deaths of more than a million seabirds, and more than 100,000 marine mammals annually.
The economic costs of plastic pollution affecting tourism, fisheries and shipping sectors are estimated to be at least $8 billion per year.
During this program Mahdavi Venkatesan from Sustainable Practices will discuss what plastics are made of, where they go and how long they stay in the environment, their impacts on wildlife and human health, and the threats they post to Cape Cod.
Sustainable Practices is an organization that has been working with towns across the Cape to adopt bylaws aimed at eliminating a key contributor to this problem from our waste streams, specifically single-use plastic bottles.
